Property Tax
Key Issues: The key issue is that taxes were just raised on average 68% and in individual cases much more. There is considerable agreement that the appraisals were not actually market value, which could really turn into a hornet's nest. There is a sense of wonderment that the Supervisors could think they can get blood out of a turnip and actually collect those taxes from a significant portion of county residents.
UPDATE: Supervisors Hoke and Strickler are quoted as saying this tax raise is just the beginnning. More are coming in two years. Why? It's hard to follow. The budget was about $37M in 2003, and in 2007 it was $65M. NOT COUNTING THE SCHOOLS. The county budget has increased dramatically in the last four years. Dramatically. There will be more research on this over time.
Too many proposed capital improvements will force our property taxes to keep rising year after year. Something is wrong, but I don't know what.
